Tehuset

History

The tea house is located on Karl XII Square, next to the statue of Karl XII under the elm trees, with roots dating back to the 1950s.

It was founded by Erik Jarnebäck in connection with Stockholm’s 700th anniversary in 1953, when Kungsträdgården was renovated with kiosks, fountains, and stages for the public. (The 700th anniversary itself actually took place in 1952, but the celebration was postponed by one year because Helsinki was hosting the Olympic Games that same year.)

The business is still run today by the Jarnebäck family and builds on a history of tea, coffee, spices, the Piccolino Bar, and TeBoden Charabang. Through this tradition, Tehuset helped establish an Italian café culture in Stockholm early on, with espresso, espresso bars, and new ways of socializing over coffee.

Tehuset’s location also links it to the “Elm Dispute” of 1971, when the surrounding, giant, century-old elm trees were saved from being cut down in connection with a planned subway exit. Here, Stockholmers saved the elms, which became an important milestone for future urban planning in the city center. The event was a clear expression of Stockholmers’ dissatisfaction with ongoing demolitions, unpleasant office environments, a lack of greenery, and overwhelming car traffic.

Tehuset continues to be a small and relaxed spot for coffee breaks, lunch, and a variety of delicious drinks in the heart of Stockholm.
